"Prelude" - Dunwoody Farmhouse / Friday, February 7th
Show Statement:
This show brings together work in a variety of styles, but to me, style doesn’t really matter. What does matter is color. Everything I do revolves around it. Over the years, I’ve developed a color theory that uses music as a tool to test and guide color experimentation. I first developed the theory in 1998, and since then, I’ve been refining and hammering out any issues.
The most intense phase of testing happened a few years ago in my last studio, a converted playroom I called the “Play School.” During that period, I ran over 200 experiments connecting color and music, resulting in many miniature paintings that you’ll find on the rack in the front room. One of the centerpiece works here is the canvas tablecloth I used to mix colors on during those years at the Play School—a document of constant experimentation and discovery.
In the past year, I’ve shifted my focus to writing and structuring the theory so that others can use it. It’s been a huge undertaking that has consumed much of my time and energy. Now, I’m getting close to publishing it and, more importantly, to using it at full capacity in my own work. So expect to see a lot more from me in the years to come.
